I know some people guessed (correctly!) that the new album would be titled "Babel" after that cryptic-teaser-trailer-promo-thing came out a little while ago, but I don't still don't understand how they specifically got "Babel" out of that. I watched it back again & I'm still completely lost. Can you fill me in?
Hi there! Alright, so at the end of the teaser video (which I still don’t understand why the media are calling “cryptic”), viewers are shown this screen:
Upon seeing that, some people (myself included) noted that the flags must have some sort of meaning because two are repeated and they’re clearly not random in nature. A bit of research determined that the flags were indeed International Maritime Signal Flags that each stand for a letter and, in this particular case, spell out the word “Babel”. The flags behind the band in the teaser video also spell out the word “tour.”
To take things one step further, Winston and Ben did an interview at Hurricane Festival in Germany on 23rd June in which Winston stated the title of the new album “shares its name with a film,” and there just happens to be a film called Babel.
Of course, any talk of Babel being the new album title was purely speculation until yesterday when the band officially announced it but, really, they technically—and sneakily—announced it weeks ago when they started using those signal flags.
