Local Bluegrass Band Gets Big Boost from Mumford and Sons Mention (2011-07-07)

(WABE) - (Announcer): Some say the good life is all about being in the right place at the right time.

And you won’t get an argument from the members of bluegrass band “Seven Handle Circus.”

As WABE’s Jim Burress reports, one of the most popular music acts around happened to hear the band by accident. And that one moment changed everything.

(Reporter): As guitarist Shawn Spencer tells it, his band, Seven Handle Circus, was playing a Bluegrass Breakfast’ last month at a local eatery.

They weren’t necessary excited about it.

(Spencer): “It didn’t even pay that well. But we didn’t have anything else to do on a Sunday morning. So we agreed to do it.”

(Reporter): So there they were, amid folks eating omelets and sipping OJ. Playin’. Pickin’. Pretty good music, actually. And then “it” happened.

(Spencer): “Well, I don’t think we recognized them at first. I’d actually never seen them.”

(Reporter): In for breakfast walks the band, “Mumford and Sons.” As in chart-topping, Grammy Award nominated for Best New Artist and Best Rock Song, Mumford and Sons.

(Spencer): “Yeah, it was pretty crazy.”

(Reporter): The guys knew the group was playing nearby at the Fox Theater. But when they heard the English bandmembers actually speak, they had no doubt.

(Spencer): They were like filming us on their phones and stuff, and we just got to talking to them afterwards. And they were like We really enjoyed your music. Do you want to come play at the Fox tonight?’”

(Reporter) As Spencer says, how could you say no to that?

(Specner): “Mumford and Sons talked about us on stage, so all the people at the concert heard about us. Our website traffic went through the roof immediately.

(Reporter) Since then the band’s gotten a lot more attention, and bookings.

Seven Handle Circus heads back to the studio to record another album later this month…

Mumford and Sons: Greetings from the Front Row

“…Annnnnyhoo, all that stuff was cool, but perhaps the coolest thing that has happened so far was being able to get front row, DEAD CENTER seats to the uber sold out Mumford and Sons show at The Fox Theatre in Atlanta. I mean, I had better seats than the band. Every now and again, I’d have to dodge spittle from Marcus as he sang. If I was any closer, I would’ve had to use a condom. And yeah, it was cool. At one point, there was an awkward moment when Marcus was singing a ballad at me. Straight sustained eye contact for about 20 seconds. I felt dirty, like when your Grandma kisses you on the lips to say goodbye…”

15. BRAND NEW SONG NEVER HEARD BEFORE EVER!!

- They came back out and Marcus said, “We’re going to let you see a little bit of our writing process. This song doesn’t have a name or any proper lyrics, but we just wanted to share it with you.” And it was f’n awesome! He was like I need the horns to come in now, and stuff like that. It was SO COOL. Like it was amazing. I was so blown away. The whole theater got quite with out them even asking us too, and that was near impossible to do for Timshel and Sister.

16. The Cave.
