Given all that’s transpired during what seems like a highly compressed timeframe — backing Bob Dylan on the Grammys, selling a million albums, appearing at Bonnaroo — it’s hard to believe it’s been almost two years since this British collective released its debut full-length. In the past couple of months, they’ve finally started to preview some new material, including a cover of The National’s “England” and a fine, slow-then-fast original, “Lover’s Eyes.” This latest track may well be the most affecting of the lot. Recorded at Colorado radio station KBCO, it treats the notion of “home” as something more than a physical place. Both mournful and pretty, it sounds a bit like Glen Hansard at his most wistful.

With their yet unnamed sophomore record still in progress, the Mumford men have debuted the beginnings of a new tune, “Home.” The new track might not have the same rowdy, loudmouthed, we’re-singing-some-damn-bluegrass-in-the-back-of-a-damn-bar vibe as their hit single “Little Lion Man,” but it still takes an intricate approach to showcasing lead vocalist Marcus Mumford’s haunting pipes, albeit a in a softer way. Though the bare-bones track isn’t an official studio recording, “Home” is filled with tight vocal harmonies, Marcus’ signature mandolin and that acclaimed banjo we all love.

Mumford & Sons Unveil Gorgeous New Ballad

Mumford & Sons — the British roots rockers and recent SPIN cover stars whose 2009 Grammy-nominated debut Sigh No More has gone platinum in the U.S. — are readying a second studio album to be released later this year. But the group have been debuting new material on the road, including several tracks at their headlining slot at Glastonbury. The latest: the tentatively titled “Home,” which Marcus Mumford and Co. unveiled at a recent in-studio appearance for Colorado radio station KBCO. Stream the track below (via TwentyFourBit).

Unlike the raucous barnburners “Little Lion Man” and “The Cave” from Sigh No More, this new tune finds the boys exploring far quieter terrain. “Home” features delicately plucked guitars, banjo, and cascading piano melodies as Marcus Mumford delivers a lovesick tale of life on the road. “I’ll be home in a little while,” he croons in his deep, resonant baritone. “Lover, I’ll be home.”

Untitled New Song live in Hyde Park by Mumford and Sons

I know a lot of people who wanted to listen to them live in Hyde Park were outside the UK, and I understand that pain whenever I’m away from this amazing country, so I recorded one of their new songs as they played it for you guys to have a listen. The quality’s not shit, but it’s not brilliant, as I was recording from my computer as the radio played! I really can’t wait for their new album.
