"Wuthering Heights" director Andrea Arnold on choosing to use Mumford & Sons' song "The Enemy" in her film.
- The Playlist: Why did you choose to have the closing sequence set against the Mumford and Sons' song “The Enemy”?
- Andrea Arnold: I wanted to have a song at the end. I always think the credits are slightly different from the film, so you can have music since it's a separate little world because it's not in the universe of the film. I tried a few things and there was a country feel to Mumford and Sons, and a Western feel to the film. I thought a country sound would be quite appropriate. They came along to a screening and came up with a couple of songs. I liked both actually, but went with [“The Enemy”]. For some people it takes them out of the film and it's not a popular—for some people, the real cinephiles seem to not like it because it's been pure sound-wise up to that point.
- The Playlist: It adds a somber, but closing element.
- Andrea Arnold: It seems to me like a present for the audience.

Hello and I love the blog. It has probably been asked on here before but is there a link to the whole version of Enemy? Thanks so much oh and Ghosts that we knew with violin sounds amazing. I've only heard the Radio 104.5 version.
Hello, and thank you!
According to the Mumford & Sons Official Website, “There are currently no plans to release ‘The Enemy’.” Cue weeping and gnashing of teeth.
You are right about Ross’ fiddle on “Ghosts That We Knew!” The song is gorgeous anyway, but that solo is heart-wrenching! Listen to and download that version of the song, recorded live at KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas, by clicking here.
Thanks for your question, and please let me know if I can help with anything else!

Hi! I was wondering if you knew when they'll be releasing their new song "The Enemy", there's just that many 1min10 on repeat that I can handle, I can't wait to hear it all! Thanks
Hi! Sadly, according to the Mumford & Sons Official Website, “there are currently no plans to release ‘The Enemy.’”
In my personal and humble opinion, I believe they should release the track. The difficulty in doing so, however, may lie in the fact that there is no other music in the film Wuthering Heights, and there is no soundtrack on which to release the song. We can only hope that they will make “The Enemy” available in its entirety in the near future because I am certain there are hordes of fans dying to have it!

Tell me not of heartbreak, it plagues my soul, it plagues my soul.
Bury me beside you, I have no hope in solitude.
And the world will follow to the earth, down below.
But I came and I was nothing. And time will give us nothing.
So why did you choose to lean on a man you knew was falling?
